Power Dressing might seem like an outdated concept but it is back on rise, especially since the offices are open, events are happening in person, in the post covid era.
If you go by the older definition, power dressing refers to a style of dressing that conveys the impression of confidence, high self-esteem, and authority.
This definition seems a little obsolete, doesn’t it?
Let’s redefine power dressing for a modern woman.
Modern power dressing is wearing the clothes YOU feel powerful in. Be it a suit or a saree, it’s your choice to wear whatever makes you feel in charge.
But this doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few rules of dressing up that you need to follow. After all, you have to dress for the occasion too!
I know it seems a little contrasting, what I am saying but bear with me a little. Let me explain this with an example, if you’re attending a wedding wearing a formal suit might make you feel a little out of place.
So, we’ll change the definition of power dressing just a little bit more.
Modern Power Dressing is the style of clothing that is apt for the occasion and makes YOU feel good, confident, and happy in yourself.
Sounds good, right?
It is!
So, let me share some dressing tips with you all that can be used on any occasion.
- Tailoring– A classic tip for dressing is wearing well-fitted clothes. They not only look good but they make you feel good and are more comfortable. Keep small details in mind like shoulder length, a cinch in the waist in your suit jacket. These small details can make all the difference.
- Luxe Fabrics: You don’t always have to choose cotton as the go-to fabric. Cashmere, silk, and satin are amazing fabrics that look rich and full of texture. I admit they are a bit of a splurge but trust me, they are totally worth it.
- Strategic Jewelry: Use your jewelry to bring focus to the part of your style you want the focus on. Larger earrings will bring focus to your face while a necklace might take the focus away from the face. If you want to showcase the beautiful neckline of the dress you’re wearing, wear a necklace and avoid larger earrings.
- Make-up: Depending on the occasion, your makeup will differ but in my opinion, a red lip never goes out of style. Invest in a beautiful red lipstick that suits your skin tone. Even when you keep the rest of your makeup understated, just a red lip will make you noticeable.
- Footwear: Make a statement with your footwear girls! Even in the most corporate-y look, a statement pair of red pumps will never fail to make an impression. If you prefer to keep your footwear understated, then black is always a safe option that goes with pretty much every outfit.
Follow these basic principles and you’ll never fail to wow people around you.

Now that we know what power dressing means, let’s move to the next question- Do you really need it?
Well….. In short, yes.
But I think it’s important to know why you’re power dressing. You do it for YOURSELF. Not anybody else.
Remember ladies, as long as you are in control, nobody else is. And that’s all that matters.
I hope this helps you in choosing the right outfit for the next occasion.
